Why Is My Jandy Heater Not Starting?

Owner-safe checks when a Jandy pool heater does not start, plus the point where gas, electrical, or internal service must stop.

01

Start with what you can verify.

  • Confirm the circulation pump is running and the returns have normal flow.
  • Confirm the heater is enabled and the setpoint is above the current water temperature.
  • Check whether pool/spa valves and automation are in the intended mode.
  • Read and photograph the complete display, status LEDs, and error code before changing anything.
  • Check accessible baskets and the filter-pressure trend if flow seems lower than normal.
02

What the symptom usually points to.

No call for heat

The thermostat, setpoint, schedule, automation mode, freeze protection, or remote controller may not be requesting heat.

Low-flow or pressure message

The pump speed, valve position, baskets, filter condition, or a flow/pressure-sensing problem may be involved.

Ignition or flame fault

Fuel supply, ignition, combustion air, venting, flame sensing, or internal controls require qualified heater service.

Heater starts, then stops

Intermittent flow, overheating, scaling, exhaust restriction, automation changes, or a safety limit may be opening.

03

Take one controlled action at a time.

  1. 1

Restore normal circulation and confirm the filter is within its documented service range.

  2. 2

Set the correct pool or spa mode and raise the setpoint only enough to create a clear call for heat.

  3. 3

Record the model, serial number, fuel type, water temperature, setpoint, flow condition, and exact fault.

  4. 4

Check the manufacturer’s manual for that exact code and follow homeowner-accessible directions only.

  5. 5

If the same fault returns, leave the heater off and give the record to a qualified pool-heater technician.

04

Check the label before the parts list.

Jandy

For JXi/JXiQ systems, confirm AquaLink or iAquaLink is actually calling for heat, the setpoint exceeds water temperature, flow is established, and the display is not reporting a lockout. Record the exact message before cycling power.

Pentair

Pentair MasterTemp and connected systems may receive commands from Pentair automation. Record the panel indicators and automation state before cycling power.

Hayward

Hayward H-Series and Omni-connected systems can show Ready without firing when the setpoint, equipment priority, or freeze-protection state blocks the call. Preserve the displayed code.

SAFETY BOUNDARY

Stop here and use qualified help.

  • If you smell gas, see soot, hear delayed ignition, or observe flame rollout, turn the heater off, leave the area, and contact the gas utility or qualified service as appropriate.
  • Do not bypass pressure, flow, high-limit, rollout, vacuum, or ignition safety switches.
  • Do not open gas valves, burner compartments, line-voltage panels, or sealed refrigeration circuits.
  • Never operate the heater without confirmed circulation or with a damaged exhaust or vent system.

Verify your exact model and product label.

Model families, controls, water conditions, and local requirements vary. These official resources are a starting point; the label and manual for the exact equipment or chemical control the work.
